The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps operate thousands of Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps units around the world. The Coast Guard has one JROTC unit at the Maritime and Science Technology Academy located in Miami, Florida. JROTC instructors are retired military service personnel who meet each military branch’s requirements and prerequisites for commanding a JROTC cadet unit.

To calculate the Minimum Instructor Pay for JROTC instructors, the Army adds together the pay and allowances the JROTC instructor candidate would receive if she were still on active duty. This includes base pay, basic allowance for housing, Basic Allowance for Subsistence. Additional allowances may also apply such as a clothing allowance, overseas housing allowance and Cost of Living Allowance. The Army deducts her retirement pay from this amount. The remainder is her MIP.

To calculate the annual monthly and yearly salary for Air Force JROTC instructors, the Air Force also adds together the pay and allowances the JROTC instructor candidate would receive if he were still on active duty. This includes basic pay, BAH, BAS and a clothing allowance for enlisted personnel. The Air Force then deducts his retirement pay from this amount and the remainder is the minimum salary the school with the JROTC unit must pay to the instructor. The Air Force will also calculate a minimum yearly salary by multiplying the monthly minimum salary by the length of the JROTC instructor candidate’s contract. The minimum contract length is 10 months.

To calculate the annual monthly and yearly salary for Marine Corps JROTC instructors, the Marine Corps also adds together the pay and allowances the JROTC instructor candidate would receive if she were still on active duty. This includes basic pay, BAH, and BAS. The Marine Corps then deducts her retirement pay from this amount and divides this amount by the number of months in her JROTC instructor’s contract. This is her minimum monthly salary. All Marine Corps JROTC instructors are responsible for negotiating their own contracts with the school administration in which the unit will operate.

To calculate the annual monthly and yearly salary for Navy JROTC instructors, the Navy adds together the pay and allowances the JROTC instructor candidate would receive if he were still on active duty. This includes basic pay, BAH and BAS but does not include any type of incentive pay that may have been included in his active duty regular pay. The Navy then deducts his retirement pay from this amount and divides this amount by the number of months in her JROTC instructor’s contract. The Navy will further divide this amount by the 30 days. This is the daily rate the instructor shall be paid.
Coast Guard JROTC programs work in conjunction with the Navy. The Navy uses the same pay structure for Coast Guard JROTC instructors as it does for Navy JROTC instructors.
